Instructor’s Guide Now Available for Anthropology Explored

The Smithsonian Institution recently released the second edition of Anthropology Explored: The Best of Smithsonian AnthroNotes, edited by Ruth Osterweis Selig, Marilyn R. London, and P. Ann Kaupp. The 36 lively articles, with over 40 cartoon illustrations by archaeologist Robert Humphrey, explore recent discoveries in human origins, archaeology, and cultural diversity while tracing culture change around the globe. The book is divided into three main sections: Investigating our Origins and Variation; Examining the Archaeological Past; and Exploring our Many Cultures. Each chapter begins with a new abstract and concludes with a 2004 update section. Essays come from the Smithsonian publication AnthroNotes, winner of the SAA Excellence in Education Award. A supplementary Instructor's Guide, which should aid teachers in using the book in the classroom, is now available free online at www.nmnh.si.edu/departments/anthro.html/outreach/anthropology_explored.htm.

Book Explores Historical Archaeology

Unlocking the Past: Celebrating Historical Archaeology in North America is a new book and the first phase of a Society for Historical Archaeology (SHA) Public Education and Information Committee project. The book is aimed at secondary school and adult readers and uses the contributions of  more than 30 researchers to tell “the stories of historical archaeologists pioneering on sites in rural and urban North America, on the land and under water, at forts, shipwrecks, missions, farms, city lots, and sites of industry.” It is divided into several thematic sections—cultural contact and contest, human- environmental interactions, city-building, and rural life in agricultural and industrial communities—and concludes with a look at the future of the past, through the experiences of a new generation of historical archaeologists. This project encourage readers of the book and visitors to the accompanying web site to become partners in preserving and exploring the cultural heritage that is our legacy. The book is edited by Lu Ann De Cunzo and John H. Jameson, Jr., and is published by SHA under a cooperative agreement with the University Press of Florida.
