The SAA Excellence in Public Education Award is comprised of three award categories that are offered in a rotating cycle. These three categories are defined below:
Archaeologist Category (for the years 2000, 2003, 2006)
Eligible candidates will be professional or avocational archaeologists who have contributed substantially to public education through writing, speaking, or otherwise presenting information about archaeology to the public, or through facilitating institutions and other individuals in their public education efforts.
Educator Category (for the years 2001, 2004, 2007)
An educator is an individual involved in education who is not a professional archaeologist, who writes, speaks, or otherwise presents information to the public or facilitates institutions and other individuals in their public education efforts. These individuals may include pre-collegiate educators, administrators, heritage interpreters, museum educators, and others.
Institution Category (for the years 2002, 2005, 2008)
Possible candidates for this category include educational, research, and management institutionswho present information to the public or who facilitate others in their public education efforts. These institutions include, but are not limited to, government agencies, private foundations, profit and non-profit corporations or companies, and professional and avocational archaeology societies.
